The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommending an additional vaccine for American adults over 50.

The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, also known as PCV, protects against pneumococcal bacteria, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections.

The vaccine was previously only recommended for adults 65 and older.
