City crews worked through the night salting and plowing roads across Oklahoma City, but residents should remain cautious as snow and icy conditions persist, particularly on neighborhood and rural streets, officials said Friday morning.

“Our crews worked overnight, salting and plowing city streets, and I think they made some really remarkable progress,” said Kristy Yager, spokesperson for the city of Oklahoma City. “They're still icy in spots, so people need to be very, very careful. But I would consider our city snow routes passable.”

She said neighborhood streets may be a problem because most are not on the city snow route.

Yager advised residents to consult the city’s snow route map, available at okc.gov, to identify the main streets that have been treated and plowed.

She emphasized that if travel is necessary, drivers should go slowly and exercise caution, particularly on bridges and overpasses where black ice is common.

“I would say to slow it down. You just don't know where that black ice is. We've got a lot of bridges and overpasses that you don't even think about when you're driving every day, and then all of a sudden, you know that that ice and or that precipitation is freezing,” Yager said.

City crews have prioritized clearing major arterial streets in a grid pattern, ensuring coverage of every other north-south and east-west route.

With 30 trucks operating 24/7, Yager noted that progress takes time, especially as snowfall accumulates.

In addition to road conditions, the storm has impacted several city services.

Trash and recycling collections have been postponed, with updated schedules available online. Municipal Court proceedings, city recreation centers, and the Oklahoma City Zoo are also closed for the day.

For those who don’t need to travel, Yager encouraged residents to enjoy a snow day and stay off the roads whenever possible.
